Learning Analytics is a hot topic right now and it has every reason to be. I like to take a word of advice from The Swine World a book written in 1919.
"Weighing a pig doesn't make it grow any faster, but figuring out how to weigh it could win you free pig feed for the whole summer".
With variants this quote is often used in education. Put simply there is little value in just tracking number of completions or time spent doing learning. Focus thinking at the start of a project - what do you want to track and why - what benefit will it have to the learner or to your company? (Obviously these are just your starting questions - keep asking yourself why, why, why).
This will help you design a solution that genuinely meets the needs of the learner and achieves the business outcome required.
