It's tough to self-edit when everything feels important, but it has to be done. Years ago I came up with a simple way to help subject-matter experts - called fire, fire, fire - this approach is equally appropriate when you are self-editing.
Imagine you're training somebody and the room bursts into flames.
As they run from the room what are the three things you'd insist they knew.Focus on those three things, the rest of the content can be delivered differently or picked up at a later date.Remember - in most instances your learners don't have to know as much as the expert - just enough to continue learning alone.
I appreciate this seems simplistic - but that is the beauty of it's success - it's a concept that anybody can understand. Give it a go and see if it works for you.
